About the work ‘EDUCATION’
‘Education’ is part of a series of paintings featuring the mother-daughter pair Dorothea and Claire. “being able to work with real people who have real and deep relationships, powerful emotional connection, personal and combined histories, who share time, represent the generations and physical change (…) was the perfect starting point for this project.”
This surreal image about history and education unfolds in a long desolated, practically empty, school classroom. ‘Education’, in the wider sense of the word, is here being examined: Education for life and experience, traditions and norms that are passed on from one generation to the next. The nearly empty room and the distorted furniture represent past life, they are a symbol for the history, which provides the framework for current and future existence.
